I didn't want to draw yet another model-thin mermaid - I wanted one with some meat on her bones. It makes sense that you'd want some extra insulation in the cold depths of the sea. You hardly ever see skinny seals.

Amen. Yeah and is what I would look like as a mermaid. I bet the mermen like them soft and cuddly to. Pretty face and lovely composition and colors.
